CATALOOCHEE SKI AREA OPENS TODAY
OFFERING SKIERS THEIR FIRST RUNS OF THE SEASON
Maggie Valley, NC Cataloochee Ski Area will join the ranks today of resorts offering skiers and snowboarders their first turns of the season. The southeast resort located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina .will be providing the first skiing and riding of the 2007/2008 season for winter snowsports enthusiasts beginning this afternoon, November 7, when the slope ropes open at 1:00 pm. Operating for a 47th season, today’s opening marks the second straight year the North Carolina resort opened the first week of November.
The oldest winter area in North Carolina continues to make significant improvements to its snowmaking capabilities allowing the resort’s operational staff to be aggressive in helping skiers and snowboarders with their first tracks of the season. “We expanded our snowmaking lake and the extra water is essential to our snowmaking operation, allowing us to open early in November”, says Chris Bates, Cataloochee’s General Manager. “We expect the temperatures to remain favorable the next few days and we are expecting our snowmakers to convert over one-million gallons of water into snow.” Two slopes are expected to be available for skiers and snowboarders when the ropes drop this afternoon, on a 8 20 inch base. Midweek and student rates will be in effect.
Additional snowmaking will occur whenever temperatures permit. Nightly cold temperatures in the 20’s are in the forecast, allowing snowmakers to continue slope coverage and open additional slopes as quickly as possible.
